Maths
Numbers are all around us and as adults we use maths in some form every day.
At St. Martin’s we aim to encourage a positive attitude towards maths. Maths is a core subject in the National Curriculum. As well as being taught in a daily Maths lesson, the children also explore the natural links maths has with many other subjects. These include Science, Geography, Design and Technology, P.E and Art. It is through its links with other subjects that areas such as shape, measures and data handling are investigated in real life situations.

Numbers Everywhere

My Money week
The children celebrated National “My Money Week” by taking part in a range of different money related activities.
There was a whole school “Make a Money Box” competition. Children in Key Stage One made their own money boxes in the half term holidays with fantastic results, whilst children in Key Stage Two constructed their own from nets.
One of our School Governors Mr Ian Axtell judged the entries. There were so many imaginative and colourful designs that it was a very difficult task!
The children were asked to have a sort out of their old books, toys and games at home in order to hold their own “Bring and Buy” sales in school. Each
class then decided how they would like to spend their profits. Some chose to go on a trip to town to buy new “Golden Time” toys, whilst the Foundation classes bought ice lollies and gave some of their proceeds to “Water Aid” charity.
A visiting speaker, Kelly Rose, from Lloyds Bank kindly came in to talk to the children about money matters and classes visited the school “shop” to pay for good and work out the change.
Even the children in the Nursery were involved! They had a role play car wash in the Nursery outdoor area!

Parents' Maths Workshops
At St. Martin’s we believe strongly that working in partnership with parents is essential in the development of children’s learning. It is for this reason that we hold parents' workshops in Maths. The aim is to provide parents with practical ideas and activities to support their children in Maths.
Here are just some of the many positive comments we've received from the parents who've attended the workshops
“I found the workshop very useful, it gave easy ways to include more maths into our everyday life”.
“An interesting and enjoyable afternoon, my son thought it was great and it has encouraged him with his maths”.
“Thank you for the opportunity, I find these workshops give me an insight in to how my children are taught”.
Mighty Maths Day!
We hold whole school Maths days such as our problem solving “Mighty Maths Day”, so that the children can enjoy and learn through practical maths activities.

Fun-key Club

We are running a “Fun Key” Maths club for year 2 children in conjunction with older children from Hereford Academy. The project is funded by Jesse Norman M.P and is run by teacher Maggie Steel. The children enjoy counting and learning maths skills working 1:1 with an older child from The Academy.
