Year 1

There are 2 classes in Year 1, 1V and 1H.

Mrs Vedmore is the 1V teacher and Miss Harris is the teacher of 1H. Our teaching assistants are Miss Woodward, Mrs Scargill and Mrs Davies.

We do PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays in 1V and on Wednesdays and Thursdays in 1H.

We try very hard to make sure the children are read with 3 times a week in school and highlight to the children how important it is for them to read each night at home if possible – to encourage this we have a rainbow readers assembly every Wednesday where the children receive a rainbow readers certificate if they have read at least 5 times in a week – they are also given a book after they have received 4 of these certificates consecutively.

In Year One, as part of our whole school Roald Dahl week we are looking the story of ‘The Enormous Crocodile’. We have all enjoyed listening to the clever tricks he did. We have described the crocodile and other story characters using WOW words! In the afternoons we have been making crocodile puppets and painting pictures of crocodiles.

Our topic this half term is ‘What can we learn about our World from stories?’ The children will be looking at well-known stories such as Little Red Riding Hood and the Gingerbread Man and also stories from other countries such as Tiddalik and Lion Dance. We will be looking at the countries of the UK, their capital cities and seas around our island. The children will also locate the countries of the stories we are studying. In science we will be looking at materials – naming and sorting them and carrying out investigations.

The children will continue to have homework related to work done in class given out on a Friday. Please help your child with this but encourage them to do the written part of the activity. They will also have spelling to learn.

We are really seeing an improvement in the reading of those who are practising at home. Thanks for your support.
